Two commuter rail systems run into Washington Union Station: MARC from Maryland (and West Virginia) and VRE from Northern Virginia. Both connect with Metrorail, and both charge by the stations you travel between.

Lines

MARC (Maryland)

  • Penn Line to Baltimore Penn Station via New Carrollton and BWI Airport; Camden Line to Baltimore Camden Station; Brunswick Line to Brunswick, Frederick and Martinsburg, WV.
  • Weekends: only the Penn Line runs.
  • Fares are set station to station, from $6 to $19 one way. Examples: Union Station–BWI $8, Union Station–Baltimore Penn $9. Seniors and riders with disabilities pay half fare; two children under 6 ride free with a paying adult.
  • Tickets: CharmPass app, ticket machines (including at Union Station) or ticket agents. On board, conductors take cash only (no bills over $20) and add a $5 surcharge if a machine or agent was available where you boarded.

VRE (Virginia)

  • Manassas Line and Fredericksburg Line, 19 stations, sharing the stations from Alexandria to L'Enfant and Union Station.
  • Service: the current timetables run Monday to Friday. Check vre.org for any special or holiday service.
  • Fares use 9 zones. A flat $5 single ride applies within and between Zones 1 to 3 (Union Station, L'Enfant, Crystal City, Alexandria, Franconia-Springfield, Backlick Road). Examples: Union Station–Manassas $11.05, Union Station–Fredericksburg $13.45.

Connecting with Metro

Union Station is on the Metrorail Red Line, and L'Enfant (VRE) is next to L'Enfant Plaza (Green, Yellow, Orange, Blue and Silver lines). Many other MARC and VRE stations have a Metro station or bus nearby: open a station page for transfers.

Fares and schedules change: check mta.maryland.gov and vre.org before you travel. DCTransit is not affiliated with MARC (Maryland Transit Administration) or VRE.
