WMATA says all Metrorail stations and rail cars are accessible and all stations have elevators. Elevators do break down: check our live elevator and escalator outages before you travel.

Metrorail

  • Every station has elevators. Station pages on this site show the elevators and escalators currently out of service, with the entrance concerned and WMATA's estimated return date.
  • If an elevator you need is out of service, WMATA says station managers can arrange a shuttle to the nearest station with a working elevator.
  • WMATA's official list: elevator and escalator status, with ELstat alerts by email or text.

Metrobus

All Metrobus buses kneel and have a ramp or lift, according to WMATA.

Reduced fares

  • Seniors 65+: half fare on Metrorail and Metrobus with a Senior SmarTrip card, issued the same day in person with a government photo ID.
  • Riders with disabilities under 65: half fare with a Reduced Fare Disability ID (questions: 202-962-2700, option 1).
  • MARC: seniors and riders with disabilities pay half fare. See fares and MARC & VRE.

MetroAccess paratransit

MetroAccess

WMATA's shared, door-to-door paratransit service for people who cannot use buses and trains because of a disability. It serves trips within 3/4 mile of a fixed bus or rail route. The fare is twice the equivalent bus or rail fare, up to $4.50. Eligibility requires a written application and an in-person interview.

Using this site

Station pages show elevator and escalator outages, entrances (including elevator entrances) and accessibility information published by the agencies. Our own accessibility commitments are in the accessibility statement.
